A FORMER teacher who worked in Runcorn for decades has pleaded guilty to a further string of sex offences against boys, including attempted rape and making indecent images of a child.
David Fearnley, who used to teach maths at The Grange Comprehensive, gave guilty pleas to all but two of the 25 charges levelled at him at Chester Crown Court.
The convicted sex offender admitted to 15 counts of indecent assault against a male aged under 16 years, one of attempted rape and seven of making indecent photographs of a child.
He pleaded not guilty to possession of extreme pornographic images and possession of an indecent photograph of a child.
In a separate court case in 2011, Fearnley, 61, of , Lime Avenue, Weaverham, was convicted of abusing children.
At that time the court sentenced him to a seven-year sex offences order and a three-year supervision order. He was also ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
He had pleaded guilty in August 2011 to five counts of indecent assault against children as young as primary school age.
Warrington Crown Court heard then that he plied his victims with sweets, cash, and sometimes alcohol and pornography before assaults took place.
Judge Nicholas Woodward, presiding in 2011, said Fearnley’s punishment amounted to a suspended sentence but said the defendant could not go to prison because of changes in the law since the offences took place.
Fearnley will return for sentencing on Monday, July 22, to face justice for his latest string of admissions.
Early in 2011 the ex-Royal Navy Reserve officer was suspended from his position as maths teacher at The Grange Comprehensive, where he had taught for 40 years.
The school told the Weekly News that it carried out a ‘very active’ safety review following his conviction.
The earlier offences did not take place at the Grange and did not involves pupils and there is no suggestion the later allegations were at the school or involved its students.

Grange Comprehensive teacher “is a broken man”, court hears
A VETERAN teacher and commander in the Royal Navy Reserve who admitted indecently assaulting a boy and a girl in a series of incidents dating back to 1995 has escaped jail.
Pervert David Fearnley, aged 59, who taught maths and personal and social education at The Grange Comprehensive in Runcorn for 35 years, was given a three year community rehabilitation order, sexual offences prevention order for seven years, and £1500 costs.
Sentencing him at Warrington Crown Court on Friday, Judge Nick Woodward warned him that if he fails to adhere to the stringent sex offenders’ rehabilitation programme, he will face custody.
Judge Woodward, said: “A senior school teacher and officer in the Royal Navy Reserve, you were seen in the community as a person of responsibility and so you were trusted to look after these young children.
“It is clear you took advantage of them to indulge your sexual attraction to these children.
“This may remain with them for the rest of their lives.
“It is very damaging to them.”
He indecently assaulted the victims, a brother and sister, when he lived in Runcorn with his ex-wife, three daughters and step son.
The victims were not pupils and the assasults did not happen at the Grange School.
Divorced dad-of-three Fearnley, of Lime Avenue, Weaverham, admitted five specimen charges of indecent assault, between 1995 and 2003.
The girl, now aged 30, was only 10, when the offences started in 2000 and continued for three years.
Her brother, now aged 21, was 14, in 1995, when his abuse started and it lasted for two years.
Simon Medland, prosecuting, said the victims complained in 2002, but, despite a police investigation, no charges were brought, but Fearnley’s marriage broke down.
The case emerged again recently when the girl overheard children talking about Fearnley facing a disciplinary hearing at school. He was warned about his language and conduct after a school enquiry.
The girl contacted the police.
Mr Medland said Fearnley had preyed on both children, whilst they were home alone after school.
He said: “He gave the boy treats, sweets, sandwiches and money, occasionally alcohol. He showed him pornography and warned him not to tell his mother.”
Mr Medland said no naked contact was made during the indecent assaults, it was always over clothing.
The girl said Fearnley used to tickle her and touch her tummy.
Mr Medland, said: “His hand roamed up under her shirt and he squeezed her breast. He touched her breasts, legs and thighs.”
Both victims say the abuse has had a long term effect on them.
Defending, Nina Graham, said: “He is a broken man. The career he worked so hard for is gone. He will be dismissed as a result of his guilty pleas.
“His marriage is gone, the relationship with his two eldest daughters is gone, his health is gone and his reputation is gone.”
She said Fearnley had been diagnosed with Bells Palsy two years ago.
“This is a severely debilitating illness which causes partial paralysis of the face, inhibits speech and dented his confidence.”
She said Fearnley was a dedicated teacher and had helped to improve pupils’ performance and achievements at The Grange, which she described as “a challenging school”.
He had volunteered for many years as an officer with the Royal Navy Reserve, “an example of his integrity”.
She said he will receive a lump sum from the school but will lose “many many thousands of pounds” in his pension because of his dismissal.
